Every home needs a clutch of stain removal ideas for its carpets. Without good ideas, pretty soon, your carpets will likely be covered in unmentionable stains, blots and dirty patches.
When you spill liquid food items
When it is ketchup, beer, coffee or tea that’s been spilled, your first step should be to bring out a few paper towels to clean out whatever you can of the foodstuff. Next, place six or seven paper towels on the stain and place a weight on them. This should get rid of as much of the spill out as possible. Then, it’s time to attend to the stain.
Get a piece of clean, white cloth, dip it in detergent solution and repeatedly attempt to blot away the stain as well as you can. The soap should get into the fabric of the carpet and begin to break the foodstuff down.
Once the soap has been in the carpet for 15 minutes, it’s time to bring out the vinegar. A solution of vinegar in water will help rinse the soap out. It’s bad to leave soap in carpets for two reasons – it could weaken the fabric and it could attract dirt. You need to soak a cloth in a vinegar solution and dab the soapiness away.
Vinegar isn’t good for your carpet, either. Once the vinegar has had 10 or 15 minutes to act on the soap, it’s time to rinse it out with lukewarm water. You need to soak a piece of cloth in water and sponge the vinegar away.
These steps work well whether your carpet is made of natural fiber or synthetic fiber. You do need to make a few changes, though, if your stains come from different sources. If it’s hard candy, fruit juice, chocolate or dairy, you need to switch the vinegar in the above process for ammonia solution. Then, you need to blot the ammonia out with a dry piece of cloth before using lukewarm water.
If it’s an oily stain
Spilling butter, cooking oil, makeup or egg on your carpet can produce stains that are tougher to remove. As soon as you find the stain, you need to find some solvent such as water, wet a piece of cloth with it and press it to the stain.
Once the solvent has had some time to work, your next step is to blot the stain out with cloth soaked in lukewarm water. You need to try these steps until the stain is completely out.
Mayonnaise needs to be addressed in a slightly different way. You need four different stain removal substances – detergent, ammonia, vinegar and water. Pour a little detergent solution on the stain, give it time to work, and then blot it out with a dry cloth.
Then, you pour ammonia solution in and blot that out after some time. You come back with vinegar, detergent again, and then water. After each step, you need to blot the substance out with a dry cloth.
When the pet has been naughty
For some reason, pets love peeing on the carpet. You only need to give them a few minutes by themselves with a carpet in the room. Thankfully, pee stains are not hard to get rid of. You need to wet a piece of cloth with a detergent solution and blot as much of the pee out as possible.
The next step should be to press a cloth soaked in detergent to the stain for a half minute. Once you’ve given the soap a few minutes to work, dry the spot with a dry piece of cloth. With the preliminaries out of the way, you need to bring out the real stain fighter – vinegar solution.
Press a piece of cloth dipped in a vinegar solution to the stain for a few minutes. You should see that the stain becomes lighter with each application.
If you’ve got some carpet stains then it’s time to try these tips!

Oh man, this is the true adulting blog I need in my life!! I am so bad with carpet that I prefer to not have carpet. Vinegar is so good for cleaning up so many different messes, as a natural solution. I need to look into the detergent option for pet messes in the future. Thanks for sharing!
